The Ice Age movie introduced a new creature called the Scrat. This creature was invented by the filmmakers, or it might represent an already existing species. Whatever the case, it was given a common name that’s inaccurate. The Latin name is difficult to pronounce. That’s why the common name was given. Scrat
When you first see the movie “What is the Squirrel Thing in the Ice Age?” you might immediately think of the famous mascot. The movie isn’t based on a real life animal, but the cartoon character does have some real-world implications. In fact, Scrat is the mascot of Blue Sky Studios, the same company that brought us the Rio franchise and Horton Hears a Who! (2008). The company later became a part of the Walt Disney Company, which acquired 21st Century Fox, which shut down Blue Sky Studios in 2021. However, Disney has acquired the Ice Age franchise and has retained its rights to it.
A saber-toothed squirrel named Scrat is the main character of the franchise. In recent years, Scrat has been beaten by other animals, buried in an avalanche, and run from the lava of an erupting volcano. Despite all of these challenges, Scrat never wavered in his mission to make his audience laugh. Here’s why:
Scratte
In Ice Age, you will see a hapless squirrel named Scrat. This little rodent is always chasing after an acorn. This is the character that we will most likely see in the fifth movie of the series, Ice Age: Collision Course. You may even recognize Scrat from the original film. In addition to his acorn obsession, he also plays an important role in the wider landscape effects.
The saber-toothed critter was based on a real-life squirrel, which the storyboard artist Bill Frakes said was a mascot for the movie. Peter de Save, the character designer of Ice Age, designed Scrat, and director Chris Wedge later decided to include him in the movie. Michael J. Wilson’s daughter Flora reportedly helped him develop the idea, as the latter was inspired by Scrat’s real-life counterpart.
Rudy Buck
There are several instances where Rudy Buck and the squirrel thing in Ice age is very funny, but one of the funniest ones is when they are fighting a T-Rex in a thunderstorm. As Buck tries to escape, “Rudy” slashes at his face with its enormous claw. He then quickly puts on a patch that covers his eye and leaps up onto a branch above a cloud bank. However, he is attacked by a smaller T-Rex, which smashes into him and drives him off a cliff. At this point, Buck holds on to his uvula and knocks out a tooth.
Crash, Manny, and Eddie are nearing the end of their journey with Momma. They are accompanied by two possums, Crash and Eddie, who are on a rescue mission. During their journey, Buck encounters a saber-toothed squirrel named Scrat, who is obsessed with acorns. The saber-toothed squirrel is also competing with the saber-toothed female squirrel, Scratte. This unlikely group of animals must make it out alive in the end.
Scrat’s acorn obsession
If you’re unfamiliar with the Ice Age, then you may wonder what the big deal is about Scrat. The ice age, a time when humans first began to live, was a time when people were hunting for food and gathering acorns. In the first Ice Age film, Scrat tried to collect acorns, but when he ran over an acorn, it caused a huge fissure in the ice, and he was forced to retreat to a safe place.
In the second film, Scrat meets Manny and his human baby Roshan. He tries to explain about saber-toothed tigers, but Diego kicks him out of the scene. Later in Ice Age: The Meltdown, Scrat tries to fight off the tiger king, but it turns out that the acorn had turned him into a rat!
Scrat’s farewell video
The team behind the animated films Ice Age and The Lion King have put together an unlisted Scrat farewell video. Scrat had to say goodbye to his friends, who had become like family to him. He wanted nothing more than a nut to chomp on. The video also features the team saying goodbye to the beloved character Buck Wild. Blue Sky Animation is a prolific animation studio, and the team’s work is well-worth watching.
